$100,000 donated to St. Ignatius skatepark
By VINCE DEVLIN of the Missoulian
ST. IGNATIUS - They went looking for 400 people, businesses or groups to
join their “club,” where membership involves a $1,000 donation to help build a
skatepark for the youth of St. Ignatius.

On Saturday alone, the Skate Ignatius 400 Club signed up 100 members.

Or, more accurately, it signed up one member, 100 times over.

An anonymous donor committed $100,000 to the project, according to Kristie
Nerby, the St. Ignatius mom who is spearheading the drive.

That's important, because while the total cost of the project is $450,000,
it's planned in two phases - and $185,000 will get Phase I going, and give
kids a place to use their skateboards and in-line skates.

What the future holds? An image from Skateable Sculpture

WHAT’S the rural solution to concrete skateparks? Over the last 18 months
Kirkby Stephen Extreme Sports Association has been working with local arts
organisation Fold to create a blueprint for rural “urban” sports provision.

The Skateable Sculpture project is an exciting initiative that aims to build
a large-scale, earthwork sculpture (using natural materials, with minimal
environmental impact) inspired by local geological features, Michael Faraday’s
laws and natural mathematics that also offers potential for not just
skateboarding and BMX but also parkour (free running/jumping), arts performance, rock
climbing... or simply admiring the view.

As part of a series of events to get the project under way, an exhibition of
preparatory drawings and models is on show in Foldgallery, Walton’s Yard,
Kirkby Stephen, until April 29.

Visitors of all ages are encouraged to give their views on the designs and
suggest improvements before the design is finalised.

Foldgallery is open 10am to 4pm Tuesday to Saturday. Gravity 2, the
unveiling of the initial plans for the proposed sculpture, takes place in Kirkby
Stephen on tomorrow, from 10.30am to 4pm.

The project is supported by Arts Council England and Eden Arts. Visit
www.foldgallery.co.uk.
